After US Names Nigerian Terror Financier: What’s Nigeria’s Next Move?
Foreign partners have repeatedly exposed terror financiers linked to operations in West Africa. The latest US list names three individuals and six entities, including a Nigerian operating three bureaux de change in Kano and Lagos. Nigeria has often failed to act on such designations. Past lists from the UAE and recent US strikes on ISIS camps went unpursued, allowing extremist networks to regroup and expand. Terrorism now spans the North-West, North-Central and even the South-West. More than 40 schoolchildren abducted in Oyo remain in captivity, showing how insecurity has spread beyond traditional hotspots. Nigeria must use existing intelligence to investigate, prosecute and dismantle financing routes. Disrupting illicit mining, banking irregularities and BDC networks is as vital as neutralising fighters. The real question is whether there is political will to turn strategy into lasting victories.
