Tinubu Elevates Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa to Specialized Mining and Engineering University
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the conversion of Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa into the Federal University of Mining, Engineering and Technology. This move is designed to strengthen technical education and help Nigeria tap into its solid mineral resources. The Presidency says the upgrade supports the administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda by developing human capital, promoting innovation and driving industrialisation. The idea was first proposed by the senator representing Nasarawa West, who highlighted the state’s rich mineral deposits and the need for a skilled workforce. Under the new structure, the university will become a centre of excellence for teaching, research and innovation in mining, engineering, mineral processing, metallurgy and emerging technologies. It aims to train professionals capable of advancing value addition and sustainable exploitation in Nigeria’s mining sector. To implement the transition, the President has directed the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Universities Commission and other agencies to start the necessary legal and administrative processes under existing laws.
