Ex-Minister Uche Nnaji Granted ₦20m Bail in Certificate Forgery Case

Former Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology Uche Nnaji pleaded not guilty to forging his University of Nigeria, Nsukka degree and NYSC discharge certificate. He faces six counts including false claims to salary payments totaling about ₦29.5 million and money laundering allegations. After his plea, the prosecution said it was ready to call witnesses, while Nnaji’s lawyer asked for more time to prepare. Justice Joyce Abdulmalik granted bail at ₦20 million with one surety at level 15 or above in the federal civil service residing in Abuja. Nnaji must deposit both his official and personal passports as part of the bail conditions. Nnaji was arrested by DSS operatives at Abuja airport after an order from the Federal High Court. He resigned from his ministerial role in October 2025 and disputes the allegations as politically motivated. He is now the PDP’s Enugu State governorship candidate.

It's striking that the ex-minister secured ₦20m bail despite serious allegations of forging academic and NYSC credentials.

I'm not convinced this case will stick; high-profile defendants often walk free on technicalities rather than face proper trial.

Journalists and watchdogs should track court developments closely and demand transparency on each allegation's progress to ensure accountability.
