FIFA to Permit Rainbow Flags at Egypt vs Iran Pride Match Despite Objections
FIFA has ruled that fans can bring rainbow flags to the World Cup match between Egypt and Iran in Seattle. The fixture coincides with Seattle’s annual Pride Weekend and was designated as a ‘Pride Match’ before the teams were known. Both Egypt and Iran have laws outlawing homosexuality and formally protested to FIFA. Their football associations accused the initiative of clashing with cultural, religious and social values. FIFA’s spokesperson said the World Cup is inclusive and welcomes all sexual orientations and gender identities. Under the Stadium Code of Conduct, general human rights messages—including rainbow flags—are permitted if displayed respectfully.
