Why Do Nigerians Lead with Professional Titles While the West Rarely Does?
I’ve noticed that in Nigeria we often attach designations like Engr., Arch. or QS to our names, even in casual settings. It’s become part of how people introduce themselves or address others outside formal environments. In contrast, most Western professionals—even engineers, architects, economists or lawyers—don’t use their qualifications as name prefixes. Apart from medical doctors, PhD holders in academic circles, military ranks and political offices, titles are largely omitted. What cultural or historical factors in Nigeria drive this habit? Have you observed any benefits or drawbacks to using these professional labels so prominently?
