Niger State Police Officer and Two Others Arrested for Alleged Rape of 13-Year-Old Girl

Niger State’s Commissioner for Women Affairs confirmed that a serving police officer and two other men have been arrested for allegedly raping a 13-year-old girl. The victim’s parents first sought help from the ministry after their attempts to get justice were blocked. Officials say the girl was repeatedly abused before the case reached the ministry. The commissioner raised alarm over rising incidents of child sexual abuse and warned that quick bail for suspects often denies victims justice and emboldens perpetrators. The ministry has moved the girl to a safe location and arranged medical care, counselling and other support services. Investigations are ongoing to ensure a strong prosecution in court.
