Sheikh Gumi Could Face 20-Year Term for Defending Armed Bandits Under Terrorism Act

Sheikh Gumi Could Face 20-Year Term for Defending Armed Bandits Under Terrorism Act

The Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022 punishes not only violent attacks but also any form of encouragement or support for terrorist groups. It defines support to include incitement, ideological backing, public advocacy, and dissemination of materials that advance violent causes. Section 13 specifically criminalises soliciting for, rendering support to, or associating with terrorist organisations. Conviction can carry a prison sentence of at least 20 years. Many Nigerians see a double standard in how the Federal Government has prosecuted comments by one public figure while others who publicly defend bandits escape scrutiny. Equal application of the law is vital to curb atrocities, no matter the speaker’s status.

Equating advocacy with terror support risks chilling legitimate debate if lawmakers don't clarify the law's boundaries more explicitly.

People should document the full context of any statements about extremist groups before sharing to avoid unintended legal repercussions.
