BVAS Glitches Deny Elderly Ekiti Voters Their Votes
Several elderly voters in Saturday’s Ekiti governorship election were unable to complete accreditation after BVAS machines failed to recognise their facial features and fingerprints. Incidents were reported at Ward 4 Unit 1 and 2 in Ijigbo, Ado Ekiti; Ward 3 Unit 6 in Osagburu, Ikere Ekiti; and Unit 3, Ward 2 in Iyin Ekiti. Affected voters said they arrived early and were assisted by INEC officials, but repeated attempts at accreditation were unsuccessful. At Ward 4 Unit 1 in Ado Ekiti, 86-year-old Aliyu Sunday could not vote after the device failed to capture his face and fingerprint. In Iyin Ekiti, about 120-year-old Mary Ajagbanla faced the same issue but vowed, “I will wait. I won’t leave until I vote.”
