Google Faces Up to $10bn in New European Damages Claims
Google is facing fresh legal claims across Europe after the European Commission imposed €890 million in Digital Markets Act penalties. The fines include €460 million over claims that Google unfairly favoured its own services in search results, and €430 million over restrictions on app developers directing users to cheaper payment options outside the Google Play Store. Price-comparison firms including Idealo, Kelkoo, PriceRunner and Italy’s Moltiply Group are pursuing or considering compensation cases. Lawyers say current and expected claims could reach $10 billion. Google has said it will appeal the Commission’s decision. The company argues that the required changes could make information harder to find and reduce traffic to European businesses. The cases may take years to conclude, but further claims could increase Google’s potential liability.
