Peter Obi: Many Nigerians Would Rather Die in South Africa Than Return Home
Former Anambra Governor Peter Obi has raised alarm over worsening conditions for Nigerians facing xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Speaking at a dinner for NDC aspirants in Abuja, he revealed that despite efforts to bring distressed citizens home, many turned down the offer, insisting life abroad was preferable to returning to Nigeria. Obi recounted meetings with political leaders and ex-South African President Thabo Mbeki to improve relations between South Africans and other African nationals. He criticised the federal government for failing to support Nigerians experiencing hardship abroad. He also lamented Nigeria’s deteriorating security, contrasting the country’s historic role in global peacekeeping with its current inability to secure itself. At the same event, NDC leaders explained delays in adopting electronic voting for primaries and urged party unity ahead of elections.
