Auchi’s Arewa Community Launches Sit-at-Home to Protest Insecurity
The Arewa Community in Auchi, Etsako West LGA of Edo State, declared a sit-at-home protest from Friday. They aim to draw attention to the perceived persecution of northern residents amid rising insecurity in Edo North. Community leader Chief Bawa Mohammed said most northerners in Auchi are law-abiding migrants who fled violence in the North. He noted that only a small minority engage in crime and urged everyone to work together to isolate criminals hiding among residents. Resident Ehiz warned of the protest’s economic fallout. Hausa motorcyclists provide 80% of local transport, while northern artisans handle over 90% of auxiliary services. He said shutting down these services would have serious consequences. The action follows a series of kidnappings in Edo North. Security forces say they have arrested more than 100 suspects this year. The community calls for joint efforts between indigenes and migrants to restore peace and safety.
