Lookman’s Atletico Exit Prolongs Nigeria’s 15-Year Champions League Final Drought

Lookman’s Atletico Exit Prolongs Nigeria’s 15-Year Champions League Final Drought — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Atletico Madrid’s loss to Arsenal means no Nigerian man will feature in this season’s Champions League final. Nigeria’s wait for a men’s finalist now stretches to 15 years. After a 1-1 draw in Madrid, Arsenal edged Atletico 1-0 at the Emirates thanks to Bukayo Saka’s first-half strike. Atletico needed a big response but looked blunt in attack. Ademola Lookman failed to register a shot or create a chance before Diego Simeone withdrew him early in the second half. The last Nigerian man in a final was John Obi Mikel with Chelsea in 2012. On the women’s side, Asisat Oshoala lifted the trophy with Barcelona in 2021 and 2023.

What do you think are the main reasons no Nigerian player has reached a Champions League final in fifteen years?

I agree, scarcity of Nigerian players in Europe's elite squads and inconsistent game time have played big roles in that final drought.

Could it be that Nigerian talents miss out due to club choices rather than ability?

It's striking that despite talented Nigerians in top clubs, none have featured in a final since 2009.

Maybe it's not just about talent; club roles and competition for places matter more than we like to admit.

Nigerian players should target consistent starts in European league matches to build profiles that attract Champions League clubs.
