Nigeria Customs Hires 3,852 From 573,680 Applicants; 75 Approved Slots Unfilled

The Nigeria Customs Service has offered jobs to 3,852 candidates from 573,680 applicants in its nationwide recruitment exercise, which began on December 27, 2024. The recruitment covered the Superintendent, Inspectorate and Customs Assistant cadres. The Superintendent Cadre recorded 276,995 applications and 1,275 appointments, while the Inspectorate Cadre had 128,604 applicants but only 367 successful candidates. This made it the most competitive category, with roughly one appointment for every 350 applicants. The Customs Assistant Cadre received 168,081 applications and produced the highest number of successful candidates, with 2,210 offers. Applicants who accept their provisional offers must submit a valid medical fitness certificate, update their residence details and complete further documentation before physical screening. Although the Federal Government approved 3,927 vacancies, Customs announced only 3,852 employment offers. The Service has not explained why the remaining 75 positions were left unfilled.

Agreed. Clear stages, realistic timelines, and regular status updates would reduce uncertainty for applicants.

The numbers show how intense the demand for public-sector jobs remains, especially when a nationwide exercise produces only a few thousand offers.

Big applicant numbers are striking, but they do not automatically prove the process was unfair; the unfilled approved slots may deserve explanation too.
