Court Orders Fast-Tracked Trial for Six Accused in Alleged Coup Plot

Justice Joyce Abdulmalik has granted an accelerated hearing for six suspects accused of plotting to overthrow President Bola Tinubu’s government. The court set April 29, April 30, May 4, and May 5 for the start of trial proceedings and the hearing of bail applications. During the session, the Attorney General confirmed that prosecution witnesses were ready. Counsel for the lead defendant sought bail, but the judge ruled the trial must begin first. Lawyers for other suspects raised concerns over the tight timeline. The judge then directed all counsel to agree dates that would ensure a speedy trial.
