Fuel Affordability Shock: Nigerians Spend 18% of Wage on 10L, Iranians Just 0.23%

I compared petrol prices and minimum wages in Iran and Nigeria. In Iran, a litre of petrol costs about ₦40, while in Nigeria it goes for around ₦1,274. Iran’s monthly minimum wage is roughly ₦173,000 compared to Nigeria’s ₦70,000. This means an Iranian worker spends only 0.23% of their salary on 10 litres of petrol, whereas a Nigerian spends nearly 18%. These figures come from global petrol price data. It’s striking that Iran—despite its ongoing conflict—maintains cheaper fuel and higher wages than Nigeria. What policies enable Iran to subsidize petrol so heavily? And why does Nigeria’s minimum wage remain so low?

How do you think Nigerians could cope if fuel prices keep rising relative to our wages?

I agree, with fuel eating up nearly a fifth of wages we'll have to lean on carpooling and tighter budgets.

Are you asking whether people will shift to alternative transportation or find other income sources?

It seems odd that such a huge price gap exists between countries with similar oil resources.

We should explore alternative transport solutions or group purchasing to reduce per-litre commuting costs.
