Nigeria Threatens Retaliation Over Anti-Nigerian Attacks in South Africa

The Federal Government says it may take steps against South Africa after a wave of violence forced some Nigerians to seek evacuation. Evacuation flights scheduled for June 8 were delayed due to joint document checks with South African authorities. More than 1,000 Nigerians underwent verification from June 6 to June 13 before departures could resume. Foreign Affairs Minister Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu said final preparations are under way for those returning home. She added that cutting certain privileges for South Africans in Nigeria is under legislative review, reminding that Nigeria once supported South Africa’s independence struggle. Officials stress that reprisal measures remain on the table to protect Nigerians abroad and preserve national dignity.
