When the RMRDC DG Appointment Defied the Law — and the Probe Died

In May 2024, Minister Uche Nnaji named Prof. Nnanyelugo M. Ike-Muonso as Director-General of RMRDC despite the Act’s clear requirement for 18 years of post-qualification experience in science, engineering or technology. A House of Representatives ad-hoc committee began investigating compliance with the law but stalled after its chairman’s untimely death. No findings were released and the probe quietly disappeared from the legislative agenda. Later, the former minister resigned amid a forged-degree scandal, yet neither the outgoing nor the incoming minister has revisited the DG’s disputed credentials. Stakeholders warn that bypassing mandatory qualifications undermines the Council’s mandate to drive Nigeria’s industrialization and enforce its own enabling law.

Totally, it's puzzling they ignored the experience clause and then let the probe go cold.

We know someone with enough qualifications had to be available, yet they still ignored the legal requirement.

Civil society groups should demand transparency in appointments and insist on independent verification of qualifications before any next DG selection.
