Despite World Cup Exit, Ismaïla Sarr Equals Roger Milla’s Scoring Record

Despite World Cup Exit, Ismaïla Sarr Equals Roger Milla’s Scoring Record

Senegal’s Round of 32 defeat to Belgium was a heartbreaking end to their World Cup campaign, but winger Ismaïla Sarr found a silver lining in his personal triumph. Sarr opened the scoring for the Teranga Lions and added a second on the 51st minute to give his side a 2-0 lead. Unfortunately, two late goals forced extra time and a late penalty sealed a 3-2 loss. The brace was Sarr’s fourth goal of the 2026 tournament, matching Cameroon legend Roger Milla’s long-standing record for the most goals by an African player in a single World Cup. It also takes his career total to five World Cup goals, level with Milla and just one behind Ghana’s Asamoah Gyan. Despite Senegal’s early exit, Sarr’s performance cements his status among modern African football greats.

Senegal's football board should analyze what worked in Sarr's runs, then build strategies around that attacking flair for the next tournament.
