Federal High Court Rejects INEC’s 2027 Membership Timeline, Extends Deadline to September
The Federal High Court in Abuja has set aside INEC’s guidelines that required political parties to submit membership registers by May 10 for the 2027 elections. Justice M.G. Umar ruled that the commission must follow the 120-day deadline prescribed by the Electoral Act 2026. The court held that INEC cannot shorten statutory timeframes for primary election schedules, candidate data submission, candidate withdrawal or replacement, or the publication of final candidate lists. All parties now have until September to update their member databases. This judgment allows politicians who lose primaries to switch parties and pursue their ambitions. The 2027 presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for January 16, while governorship and state assembly polls will hold on February 6.
