Lagos Introduces Tenancy Bill to Curb Rent Hikes and Regulate Estate Agents
Lagos State has proposed a new tenancy law to protect tenants against arbitrary rent increases and illegal charges by unregistered estate agents. The bill, now before the State House of Assembly, would require all real estate agents to register with the Lagos State Real Estate Regulatory Authority (LASRERA). Operating without registration would become a punishable offence once the law is enacted. Key reforms include weekend and public holiday court sittings for tenancy disputes and mandatory proof of rent payment and updated utility bills for tenants seeking legal action. The legislation aims to sanitize the housing sector across every part of Lagos State.
