Cross River Task Force Foils Baby-Selling Ring, Rescues Newborn and Arrests Four Women

Cross River Task Force Foils Baby-Selling Ring, Rescues Newborn and Arrests Four Women — 1 of 4
1 / 4

Security operatives from the Cross River State Homeland Safety & Security Agency have rescued a newborn and dismantled a child trafficking syndicate in Akpabuyo LGA. On June 24, a team led by the unit commander intercepted a taxi carrying three women and an infant. The women claimed they were taking the baby to Obubra. Further investigation led to the arrest of the operator of a private delivery home, who confessed to an “implanting” scheme. Clients were made to appear pregnant for up to a year while the biological mother delivered in secret. Once the baby was born, it was handed over to the paying client for a fee. The four suspects have been transferred to the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons in Calabar for prosecution. Authorities say more arrests are underway as they work to identify the infant’s biological mother and other victims. A senior HSSA official praised the swift operation and urged citizens to use tip-off channels to report suspicious activities.
