Why Nigeria Needs Decentralized Policing to Reflect Our Diversity
In a large, diverse country like Nigeria, a unified police service risks internal colonisation by one group over others. A national defense department makes sense, but internal policing should be decentralized to reflect local realities and empower communities. Politicians have armed ethnic militias without means to pay them, fueling tax extortion and kidnappings. Boko Haram alone reportedly collects over $200 million in revenue annually, using religious justifications. Decentralized policing would distribute authority across states, enabling local divisions under a national command. This approach is key to dislodging armed groups and securing our territory without undermining national unity.
