Arrest of Activist Sparks Outcry Over Taraba Relief Distribution
Human rights advocate Abdulmumin Imam was arrested in Abuja by FCT CID officers following a petition from Dr Echuseh Audu of the Taraba State Emergency Management Agency. Authorities accuse Imam of defamation and criminal intimidation after he publicly questioned the transparency of relief aid meant for IDPs and vulnerable communities. Eyewitnesses claim that the arrest was conducted forcefully and that Imam was assaulted after asking officers to show identification. He is currently detained at the FCT CID and may be transferred to Taraba State. Imam’s lawyer, Charles Ude, says his client has always been ready to cooperate but requested a later interview date due to prior commitments. The controversy comes amid allegations that over 10,000 bags of rice and 1,000 cartons of oil intended for displaced residents were diverted. Many observers have raised concerns about accountability, transparency, and the treatment of activists who call out humanitarian irregularities.
