ECOWAS: Climate Change Could Displace 32 Million West Africans by 2050

ECOWAS says climate change could force up to 32 million people across West Africa to relocate within their own countries by 2050. Flooding, drought, extreme heat and other environmental pressures are expected to hit vulnerable communities hardest. The regional bloc estimates that about $294 billion will be needed to fund climate action, adaptation and resilient infrastructure. The figures were presented by ECOWAS Commissioner for Infrastructure, Energy and Digitalisation, Kalilou Sylla, at a carbon-markets workshop in Abuja. ECOWAS said climate change has become a major development challenge for the region. It called for stronger regional cooperation, better climate-financing systems and properly regulated carbon markets to help mobilise public and private investment.
