Two Abuja Security Guards Get Life Terms for Six-Year Rape of a Child
Two security guards have been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Federal Capital Territory High Court in Abuja. The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons secured the convictions after evidence showed repeated abuse of a six-year-old girl over six years. Justice S.M.Mayana handed down the sentences without the option of a fine. In 2016 the girl, then six years old, was lured into a toilet by one guard under the pretext of helping her avoid punishment. He forcibly assaulted her, threatened her with a knife and warned her not to speak. The abuse continued until 2022 when she was twelve. Investigations revealed that the lead guard later recruited a colleague to join in. They threatened to kill her family if she spoke out. The victim’s parents noticed alarming changes in her behavior and reported her confession at a local prayer house. The case was first handled by a reproductive health group before transfer to NAPTIP. The defendants faced charges under the Violence Against Persons (Prohibition) Act, 2015. The prosecution called five witnesses and tendered seven exhibits, including a medical report. The Director General of NAPTIP lauded the judgment as a strong warning to offenders nationwide.
