Army Calls for Evidence Over Alleged Rape of UNIOSUN Students

The Nigerian Army has urged any student claiming to have been sexually assaulted by its personnel during the recent off-campus raid at Osun State University, Osogbo, to present evidence. In a statement, the Army said no formal complaint, medical report or witness testimony has yet been submitted to substantiate the rape allegation. The statement, issued by Major Ibrahim Yahaya of the Depot Public Relations Office, noted that the university’s Vice-Chancellor publicly raised the rape claim. The Army has set up a Board of Inquiry and appeals directly to victims or eyewitnesses to provide videos, photographs, medical records or affidavits confidentially. Officials warned against spreading unverified information that could prejudice the investigation or cause panic. The Army reiterated its commitment to an impartial probe, proper protection for complainants and strict discipline for any personnel found culpable under the Armed Forces Act. Updates will follow as the inquiry progresses.

Challenging alleged victims to produce formal proofs before any inquiry risks further discouraging them from speaking out.

Perhaps students should seek independent medical examinations and submit reports promptly to authorities for proper investigation.
