Nigeria Sees 25,098 New HIV Cases in Q1 2026, Lagos and Benue Top the List

New figures from health authorities show that Nigeria confirmed 25,098 new HIV-positive cases between January and March 2026. Lagos led with 2,298 cases, followed by Benue (1,949) and Akwa Ibom (1,159). Rivers, Anambra, and Kaduna also reported high numbers, each exceeding 800 cases. In the South-West, Oyo and Ogun recorded 763 and 751 cases respectively, while Delta reported 803 cases in the South-South region. The Federal Capital Territory logged 579 cases, underscoring growing urban challenges. Northern states such as Plateau (662), Nasarawa (615), Taraba (605), and Adamawa (382) also showed notable increases. These trends highlight the urgent need for expanded testing, treatment access, and community education across all regions.

Organizing regular HIV screening events and mobile clinics across Lagos, Benue, and Akwa Ibom might help detect cases earlier and improve outreach coverage.
