Daring Operation Epic Fury: US Airmen Rescued from Enemy Territory
In a high-risk mission deep inside hostile terrain, US combat search-and-rescue teams recovered both crew members of a downed F-15E Strike Eagle. After Iranian defenses forced the jet to eject in southwestern Iran’s mountains, enemy forces closed in. A first HH-60W mission under heavy fire secured the pilot. Later, additional helicopters backed by HC-130J aircraft returned. They slipped past threats, located the weapons systems officer, and brought him out safely. A-10 Thunderbolt II jets provided cover throughout, suppressing enemy positions. Both airmen are now in Iraq and receiving care.
