Obasanjo Insists NNPC Refineries “Will Never Work Again” — Here’s Why
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has warned that the Port Harcourt, Warri and Kaduna refineries are doomed under government control. He told Sony Irabor Live that private-public partnerships succeed where the government alone fails. He recalled how Shell declined to run the refineries, citing small capacity, poor maintenance and rampant corruption. Obasanjo also revealed how Aliko Dangote once offered $750 million for a majority stake in two of the plants, only for the deal to be reversed under President Yar’Adua. He praised the current NNPC boss, Bayo Ojulari, for finally admitting that these facilities operate well below international standards. With NNPC targeting June 2026 to finalise technical partners, Obasanjo remains doubtful that these ageing refineries can ever compete with the privately owned Dangote facility.
