Civil Society Warns Over Mixed Messages from Defence Minister on Terror Strategy
The Alliance for Democratic Governance and Peace Initiative (ADGAPi) has warned that inconsistent public statements by the Defence Minister could weaken public trust and blur Nigeria’s counter-terrorism strategy. The group cited the minister’s directive in Sokoto that troops should engage terrorists immediately without orders, contrasted with his comment on a national news platform that “no country can shoot itself to peace.” ADGAPi argued these remarks, though both valid in context, risk generating confusion without clear explanations. It urged the Ministry of Defence to focus on visible security gains—rescued victims, dismantled camps and safer highways—instead of frequent media pronouncements. The organisation also called for improved coordination among security agencies, balanced use of kinetic and non-kinetic tactics, and more disciplined public communication. It believes consistent strategic messaging and tangible results will strengthen national confidence in Nigeria’s fight against terrorism and banditry.
