Lawyer Urges Security Agencies to Compensate Victims of Wrongful Arrests
Human rights advocate Hamza Dantani has urged Nigerian security agencies to compensate innocent people who are wrongly arrested, unlawfully detained or harmed during operations. He praised the Department of State Services for compensating victims of wrongful arrests and operational errors. He said agencies can acknowledge mistakes and provide remedies without weakening efforts against terrorism, banditry and kidnapping. Dantani cited publicly known cases involving victims who received compensation after being wrongly linked to criminal activity or injured during security operations. He said wrongful arrests can cost people their freedom, jobs, businesses, reputation and peace of mind. He called on the police, military, EFCC, NDLEA, NSCDC and other agencies to improve intelligence gathering, identity checks, human-rights training and internal reviews. He added that arrest should not be treated as punishment and detention should not replace proper investigation.
