Transforming Lagos Markets into High-Rise Housing: A Bold Urban Plan
We need to rethink how our city uses land. Iconic markets like Alaba, Trade Fair, Computer Village, Mandillas and Ladipo occupy huge tracts that could host up to 10,000 high-rise apartments each. By relocating and rebuilding these markets in modern, organized complexes elsewhere, Lagos can free central land for much-needed housing. This would replace informal slum markets with clean, efficient marketplaces and high-density living. A serious demolition and redevelopment strategy will help Lagos compete with the world’s best cities. Other major Nigerian cities—Abeokuta, Ibadan, Akure—should follow suit if we want urban spaces designed for growth, health and modern living.
