South African Man Gets Two Life Sentences for Rape and Murder of 8-Year-Old Girl
A Gqeberha High Court in South Africa has sentenced 27-year-old Lelethu Nkosana to two life terms and an additional three years for the rape and murder of eight-year-old Veronique May. Nkosana pleaded guilty to housebreaking with intent to commit rape and murder, rape, and murder. He admitted luring the child to a relative's locked room, breaking in, sexually assaulting her, and strangling her. DNA recovered from the child and her clothing, as well as fingerprints at the scene, linked him to the crimes. The court found that the gravity of the offences outweighed his personal circumstances. Nkosana will also be placed on the National Sex Offenders Register. Investigators said the forensic evidence was central to securing the conviction. Veronique's mother said the sentence brought justice but could not erase the pain of losing her daughter.
