Arkansas Woman Arrested After Keeping $19,388 Payroll Overpayment

Arkansas Woman Arrested After Keeping $19,388 Payroll Overpayment

Fifty-year-old Rene Nichole Coleman of Jonesboro, Arkansas, was arrested after she allegedly kept a $19,388 overpayment from her employer. A payroll system error paid her $1,650 an hour for a 12-hour shift instead of her usual $16.50. When the mistake came to light, the company asked for the money back. Coleman reportedly refused, prompting the CEO to involve law enforcement. Investigators presented financial records and emails as evidence. A judge issued a bench warrant on August 18, 2025. Coleman was taken to Craighead County Detention Center and held on a $15,000 cash or surety bond. She faces a felony charge for theft between $5,000 and $25,000. She is scheduled to appear in court again on May 18, according to a regional news report.

Curious how the employer plans to recoup almost twenty thousand dollars from someone unlikely to repay it?

It seems odd that the payroll system would trigger such a massive error without multiple checkpoints in place before sending the funds.

She might argue it was an honest mistake, but keeping nearly twenty thousand dollars crosses any reasonable line of good faith.
