FG, Cross River Team Up to Standardise and Secure Mining Operations

The Federal Government, through the Nigerian Nuclear Regulatory Authority, will work with Cross River State to standardise mining activities across the state. The partnership aims to strengthen safety and oversight. Mrs Ememobong Essien, NNRA’s Operational Head, led a visit to the Cross River Commissioner for Mineral Resources, Mr Effiom-Ekaha Otu, in Calabar. She stressed the need to monitor Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials during mineral exploration and pledged to deploy resources to ensure compliance with international safety standards. Commissioner Otu assured full cooperation under Governor Bassey Otu’s leadership. He highlighted the state’s commitment to profiling all mining operators and insisted that only authorised entities will operate under federal regulations and the State’s Executive Order No1 of 2024. This initiative seeks to protect host communities from health hazards, curb unregulated mining practices, and improve documentation and security within the solid minerals sector.

Standardising operations sounds helpful, but can new rules alone prevent poor oversight and ensure real safety?

It's interesting that NNRA is leading on this, since previous safety initiatives often lacked clear follow-through or accountability.

Local mining groups should attend NNRA briefings and share feedback on safety practices to ensure standards match on-the-ground realities.
