Nigerians in South Africa: Immigration, Crime and Accountability
South Africa’s renewed debate over undocumented migrants has placed Nigerians living there under greater scrutiny. While the Nigerian government has offered willing citizens flights home, I believe many returnees may have taken the opportunity because they were already seeking a way to leave, not simply because of fears of xenophobic attacks. From my visits and personal interactions, I believe a large number of Nigerians in South Africa may lack regular immigration documents. I also believe we must confront the actions of Nigerians abroad who engage in crime, rather than dismiss every concern about our communities as xenophobia. These are personal observations, not a substitute for verified population or crime data. South Africa has serious violent-crime challenges of its own. Its official 2023/24 police statistics recorded 27,621 homicides. Nigerians are not responsible for South Africa’s broader crime crisis, but I believe the misconduct of a minority damages the reputation of law-abiding Nigerians. We must continue demanding better governance at home, while also encouraging Nigerians abroad to obey the laws of their host countries. Patriotism should include the courage to acknowledge our shortcomings and work to correct them.
