Senate to Fast-Track State Police Constitutional Amendment This Week
This week, the Senate will review amendments to the 1999 Constitution aimed at creating state police forces to tackle growing security challenges. Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele said the National Assembly resolved to fast-track the proposal and transmit it to the 36 state houses of assembly for ratification. Bamidele noted broad support from the President, state governors and legislative committees. He explained that the bill was separated from other amendments to speed its passage in response to urgent security needs. If approved by two-thirds of the state assemblies, the amendment will be sent to President Tinubu for assent. Proponents believe state police will improve local intelligence gathering, enhance accountability and strengthen community-based security responses.
