High Court Halts EFCC’s Broad Probe of Oyo State Finances
A Federal High Court in Ibadan has barred the EFCC from its planned investigation into the finances of the Oyo State Government. Justice Nkeonye Maha ruled that the commission’s broad demands amounted to a speculative “fishing expedition” without specific allegations. The court nullified the EFCC’s June letter seeking copies of all contracts and payment records from 2021 onward. The suit was filed by Governor Seyi Makinde alongside the state Attorney-General and Accountant-General after the EFCC refused to identify the contractors under scrutiny. Justice Maha held that Section 38 of the EFCC Act permits information requests only for defined offences and within constitutional bounds. The ruling underscored that investigative powers must respect the right to fair hearing and cannot be used to demand sweeping state records.
