Power Minister Orders NEMSA to Exit Federal Payroll in Two Years

The Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, has given the Nigerian Electricity Management Service Agency (NEMSA) a two-year deadline to become financially independent and leave the federal payroll. He announced this during the inauguration of the agency’s new board in Abuja. Adelabu recalled that NEMSA almost lost government funding two years ago but was granted an extension after his intervention. “So you have two years,” he said, urging the agency to ramp up internally generated revenue to cover salaries and overheads. He challenged the board to explore value-added services, retain a larger share of its earnings instead of remitting all funds to the Treasury Single Account, and pledged to work with the Finance Ministry to support this model. Beyond funding, the minister stressed the need for updated local and international training for staff and strict enforcement of technical standards to prevent issues like grid collapse. The newly inaugurated board, chaired by Ikechi Nwosu, said it would strengthen manpower and training to meet the country’s electricity sector demands.
