We Started Fuji Music Together – Kollington Ayinla Reflects on Collaboration with Barrister

In a recent interview on Oyinmomo TV, Fuji legend Kollington Ayinla reflected on the origins of the genre. He said he and the late Sikiru Ayinde Barrister started Fuji music together during their time in the military. Kollington recalled Barrister’s suggestion to keep performing as they had before joining service. He noted that Barrister released a record before him, which made him known as the genre’s first. But he insists both played foundational roles. He asserted that today he remains the leading authority in Fuji music worldwide. He also highlighted his extensive catalogue and singled out his hit “Ijoyoyo” as a fan favourite. Kollington urged respect between both fan bases and warned his supporters not to insult Barrister or his fans. He said mutual praise should always include both pioneers.

Could their army service have influenced Fuji's rhythms, or were they drawing from different inspirations?

It's interesting Kollington claims they began Fuji together, but many fans credit Barrister alone for its rise in the military era.

I'm not convinced their military service was the real spark for Fuji; grassroots street performances also played a major role.

New Fuji artists should study these pioneers' military discipline and collaborative spirit to shape their own authentic sound today.
