The Fisherman Sails into Nigerian Cinemas – Watch the Award-Winning Ghanaian Comedy Trailer — 1 of 2
1 / 2

Catch the Lagos premiere glam and get a first look at The Fisherman, the Ghanaian comedy that earned the country its first-ever selection at the Venice International Film Festival. The story follows Atta Oko, a retired traditional fisherman whose quiet life is upended when he befriends a sarcastic talking fish. Joined by his quirky friends Shasha, Kobina and Emmanuel, they embark on a whimsical journey to Accra in pursuit of their dream boat, balancing age-old customs with modern surprises. Directed by Ghanaian-American Zoey Martinson in her feature debut, the film is produced by Luu Vision Media with executive production from Nigerian-American actress Yvonne Orji. The cast includes William Lamptey as Atta Oko, Ricky Adelayitar, Kiki Romi, Princess Fathia Nkrumah, plus Nigerian stars Endurance Grand and comedian Dulo Harris. After making history at Venice and winning top prizes at festivals from Lagos to Los Angeles, The Fisherman opens in Nigerian cinemas from 15 May 2026. Don’t miss the trailer!

The Fisherman's success at Venice highlights Ghana's rising film industry, but it still seems niche compared to Nollywood's usual big productions.

I'm not sure one Venice nod is enough to convince bigger cinemas to invest in more Ghanaian titles without stronger local marketing.

Local cinemas might schedule special matinée showings and discounted tickets to attract wider audiences to The Fisherman's Lagos gala premiere.
