Nigeria Bleeds as Leaders Defer Security Until After 2027 Election
Nigeria’s insecurity crisis shows no sign of easing even as politicians focus on the 2027 election. Senate President Godswill Akpabio claimed security would improve two weeks after the vote, but Nigerians see that as wishful thinking. Bandits operate with impunity. They kidnap, torture and even behead victims on camera. Their ransom demands now run into millions, billions and even trillions of naira—far beyond what ordinary families can raise. Government responses remain empty promises. Consolatory speeches follow each attack, yet killings and kidnappings continue unchecked. Some communities now pay ‘‘protection fees’’ in livestock just to avoid violence. Security must be delivered before voters head to the polls. Promising peace only after an election offers no comfort to those living in fear today.
