8,000 Migrants Dead or Missing in 2025 – IOM Warns of Rising Risks
New data from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) shows at least 8,000 migrants died or went missing along global routes in 2025, pushing the total since 2014 above 82,000. An estimated 340,000 family members have been directly affected. The report highlights how migration corridors are shifting in response to conflict, climate pressures and policy changes, but dangers remain high. In the Americas, Central American crossings fell yet risks persisted. European arrivals dipped as routes changed, with Bangladeshi nationals now the largest group. In West Africa, journeys to the Canary Islands dropped but grew longer and more perilous. IOM calls for renewed international cooperation and investment in evidence-based interventions ahead of the International Migration Review Forum. It urges stronger measures to protect migrants, prevent deaths and support families left behind.
