Lagos Records N1.7 Trillion IGR in 2025, Surges 39% on Reforms

Lagos Records N1.7 Trillion IGR in 2025, Surges 39% on Reforms

Lagos State generated N1.7 trillion in internally generated revenue (IGR) in 2025, a 39% rise over the N1.2 trillion posted in 2024. Governor Sanwo-Olu revealed the figure while urging other states to empower their revenue services. He credited the jump to independent tax agencies, digital systems, expanded tax nets and improved compliance. The state’s reforms helped build trust with taxpayers and widened its revenue base. Joint Revenue Board chairman Zacch Adedeji highlighted growth from under N94 billion in 2007 to N1.7 trillion. He said the extra funds have funded major infrastructure and social projects under the THEMES+ agenda.

Not convinced that reforms by themselves triggered a 39% leap; other economic factors might be at play.

I'm not convinced that just copying Lagos reforms will guarantee similar revenue without addressing local governance issues first.

Other states could pilot digital tax registrations and enhance taxpayer education before scaling up reform efforts.
