Kano Government Approves ₦21.29bn to Revitalise Water Supply

Kano Government Approves ₦21.29bn to Revitalise Water Supply

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf has greenlit ₦21.29 billion for urgent repairs to Kano’s main water facilities. The funding will restore the Tamburawa and Challawa treatment plants and rehabilitate the Goron Dutse reservoirs. Acting Commissioner for Water Resources Dr. Dahir Muhammad Hashim explained that flood damage and vandalism have pushed production below 30% capacity. Tamburawa now runs at 27% of its 150 million litres per day design, while Challawa operates below 30% of its 220 million litres daily capacity. The state government assures residents that the upgrades will restore full output and stabilise supply. Citizens are also urged to protect public water infrastructure to prevent future service disruptions.

I share your optimism, but realistic upgrades may take a while before we see steady pressure across the city.

This ₦21.29bn is impressive on paper, but past projects often stall before actual benefits reach residents.

Rather than new funds, they should prioritise transparent oversight. More money won't fix ageing pipes without strict accountability.

Local residents could form monitoring committees to track repairs and report any delays to the commissioner for better transparency.
