Zimbabwe’s Power Grab Set to Fuel Fresh Migration to South Africa

Zimbabwe’s Power Grab Set to Fuel Fresh Migration to South Africa — 1 of 2
1 / 2

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba warns that Zimbabwe’s recent constitutional amendments — extending President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s term and delaying elections until 2030 — will push more citizens to seek refuge in South Africa. Mnangagwa’s ZANU-PF has controlled the country for over 40 years, and at 83 he is among Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Mashaba calls the move a brazen power grab and urges the international community to impose sanctions on ZANU-PF leaders. He says free, fair elections supervised by global observers are essential to restore democracy in Zimbabwe. Political analyst Andre Duvenhage notes that Zimbabwe, once Southern Africa’s food basket, now suffers widespread poverty. With more than two million Zimbabweans already in South Africa, the scale of the migration crisis is clear.
