Osun Election Violence Claims Raise Fears Over Political Intimidation

Ahead of the Osun governorship election, I am deeply concerned by reports of killings, threats and intimidation. No Nigerian should have to choose between exercising the right to vote and staying alive. Political competition is legitimate only when it remains within the law. Allegations of threats against voters by people linked to rival parties are troubling. So is any call for retaliation or violence. Security agencies must protect every voter impartially, regardless of party affiliation, and politicians must be held accountable for inflammatory rhetoric. I also reject religious language that insults Christians or treats any group as less entitled to belong in Nigeria. Political and religious leaders should promote peaceful coexistence, not deepen division over faith or electoral choices. All is not fair in politics when lives, rights and national unity are at risk. I urge Nigerians to reject violence and hate speech, and I hope Osun’s election is peaceful, credible and safe for all voters.

The most troubling part is that fear can silence people before election day even arrives, weakening the meaning of their vote.

That concern is valid, but it may be too early to conclude fear alone will define how people participate.

Concern is justified, but allegations should still be handled carefully; accountability matters most when claims are properly investigated and proven.

Authorities should communicate clear reporting channels, protect vulnerable areas, and act visibly against anyone threatening voters or disrupting lawful political activity.
