13 Days After Abduction, Schoolchildren in Borno and Oyo Still Held Captive
Thirteen days after Boko Haram and unknown gunmen kidnapped 42 pupils and some teachers in Askira-Uba, Borno State, and 46 students and staff in Oriire, Oyo State, the victims remain in captivity. Families have received no word on their fate, especially the toddlers who can barely care for themselves. One teacher has already been killed. Two videos emerged from the Oyo abduction showing the principal and a nursing mother pleading for rescue. In Borno, parents say there has been total silence from the kidnappers, deepening fear and trauma in the affected communities. The federal and state governments have assured Nigerians that rescue operations are ongoing. President Tinubu vowed to intensify efforts, while Borno and Oyo authorities have closed schools and reinforced security under the Safe Schools Initiative. Civil society groups continue to call for urgent action to bring the children home safely.
