Glasgow 2026: Team Nigeria’s Success Must Lead to Lasting Sports Investment

Team Nigeria’s performance at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow deserves celebration and serious reflection. The country finished seventh on the medals table with 24 medals: 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze. Nigeria was also Africa’s highest-ranked nation at the Games. Samuel Ogazi won Nigeria’s first Commonwealth Games gold in the men’s 400 metres, while Ezekiel Nathaniel took gold in the 400m hurdles. The athletics team, relay squads, weightlifters and shot put athletes all delivered notable performances. These results came despite years of inadequate facilities, funding and athlete welfare. Nigeria must not allow the celebrations to fade while its champions return to the same challenges. Sports authorities, governments and private sponsors should invest in grassroots development, qualified coaching, medical support and modern training centres. Glasgow should be a foundation for sustained progress, not another brief moment of sporting success. Nigeria has shown it can compete with the best; the task now is to make that success consistent.
