Two Arrested in Benue After Woman Is Allegedly Beaten Over Market Levy
Two men have been arrested in Gwer East LGA of Benue State over the alleged assault of a woman who could not pay a market levy. The woman was reportedly hospitalised after the incident at a public market on Monday, August 10, 2026. Witnesses said the woman explained that she had not made any sales and could not pay the levy. The suspects allegedly assaulted her after interpreting her explanation as a refusal to pay. The men said they were volunteers attached to the Benue State Civil Protection Guards and claimed they acted on instructions from their commanders to bring the woman in. The state security adviser has ordered the commanders named by the suspects to be questioned, while the two men are to be transferred to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
